What Does IT Monitoring Actually Watch?

Managed IT plans always mention monitoring, but few explain it. Here's what's actually being watched, why small oddities matter, and what happens when something turns up.

Every managed IT plan mentions monitoring. Almost none of them explain what that means, which lets it sound like either magic or marketing. It’s neither. Monitoring is a set of specific, fairly ordinary questions being asked about your systems all day, every day.

Here’s what’s actually being watched, in plain language.

Sign-ins that don’t make sense

Your accounts get used in patterns: this person, this device, this town, these hours. Monitoring notices when a sign-in breaks the pattern. A login attempt from another country at 3 a.m. isn’t proof of a problem, but it’s worth a look, and looking early is the whole point.

Updates that quietly stopped

Computers are good at installing updates right up until they aren’t. A machine that hasn’t patched in six weeks rarely announces it; it just sits there, slowly becoming the easiest door in the building. Monitoring keeps a list of every machine and its update status, so the stragglers get caught and fixed instead of forgotten.

Backups that didn’t run

The worst time to learn a backup failed is the day you need it. Monitoring checks that last night’s backup actually completed, and flags the ones that didn’t while there’s still nothing at stake. It’s the difference between a two-minute fix and a very bad week.

Changes nobody asked for

Some of the clearest warning signs are small configuration changes: a new mailbox rule that forwards messages outside the company, a new account with admin rights, security software that’s been switched off. Each has innocent explanations. Each is also a classic move an attacker makes after getting in. Monitoring surfaces them so someone can tell the difference.

Hardware wearing out

Drives fill up and fail, batteries swell, fans die. Most hardware gives warnings before it quits, but only if something is listening. Catching a failing drive early turns an emergency into a scheduled replacement.

What happens when something turns up

Watching is only half the job. When one of these checks trips, a person looks at it, decides whether it matters, and either fixes it quietly or calls you before it grows. Most findings are routine: a machine to patch, a backup to re-run. You mostly hear about them in summaries, not emergencies, which is how it should be.
